Economics at St. Mary’s

The Department of Economics at St. Mary’s University offers an innovative program for students interested in economics as a systematic way to analyze real-world issues. Our degree plans prepare students for careers in the globalized world of private and public employment. Additionally, our graduates receive an exceptional education preparing them for graduate and doctoral studies.

Research and Conference Opportunities

The Department of Economics directs the Collaborative for Economic Analysis of Borders and the SABER Research Institute. Within both of these centers, qualified students have the opportunity to conduct academic research under the direction of a faculty member. In many cases, the research may lead to a publication and/or the opportunity for the student to present the research at a conference. The Economics Department is a member of the Latino Policy Symposium and the Texas HSI Economics Department Consortium, and both provide opportunities for students to present research and actively engage in discussions on public policy related to economic issues.

Student Organizations

Students majoring in Economics who have completed 12 credit hours of Economics courses and maintain a 3.0 GPA may apply to join organizations such as Omicron Delta Epsilon, an international honor society in Economics. Once accepted and inducted, students are lifetime members. All students majoring in Economics at St. Mary’s become members of the American Society of Hispanic Economists, making them eligible to participate in many opportunities offered by the society as a recognized affiliate of the American Economic Association.
